post production evaluation.
here I am now writing what will probably be the last post of my blog, I have finished my magazine, posted it here and written short segment about each one as I posted it, now to evaluate my work on the magazine, from first research to final production and my post production feedback of my magazine where others evaluated it.
Pre-production research:
To start my magazine I needed to research the audience I will be aiming the magazine too, my target audience, thus with the making of my target audience profile and to make this I researched who I want my magazine to go to and who is most likely to purchase it, as I is a rock, punk and indie magazine, I catered the magazine to suit my target audience, I then produced a Mission statement of what I will provide the target audience and researched them further, going in to what they will want from a magazine.
After this I needed information about possible members of my target audience, thus I created my questionnaire, this helped me greatly with the sort of things people liked to I could base my magazine around them, I also took the views of some people outside of my target audience to see if I could possibly adapt it to appeal to a larger audience or just maintain it so they will not dislike the magazine, just not purchase it regularly. From this information I analysed it and complied it in to one detailed view of my TA and how I need to structure my magazine to suit them best.
After this I needed to start to plan my magazine, so I sent time reviewing my TA profile, mission statement and the analysis of my questionnaire, thus making the plans for a magazine, best suited to them, thus the creation of a shorter piece of work which outlined the magazines features, like the name, and other features of the magazine.
while I was doing this I had to also analyse the front covers, content pages and double page spreads of pre-existing magazines, so I could get an idea of what needs to be in mine, for this I picked Mojo and Q, as their am both magazines that cover the genres of my magazine, and are very successful, thus they made perfect choices to analyse. The analysis of these magazines greatly helped in the making of my magazine.
Then the production of my mock ups was necessary, so using a compilation of my research, and analysis of other magazines, I created a mock up for the magazine I thought would best appeal to my Target audience.
from these mock ups I had a set plan of what to do for my final production, and after several attempts at each of my covers, content, and double page spread, I arrived at my final products, which in my opinion has been a success, as;
-they follow my plan and mock ups well,
-they are well made and appeal to my target audience,
-they are successful, as shown by the feedback discussion I set up after the production of my magazine, where I picked the majority of them out of my target audience, thus with them liking it showing it would be a success with my target audience as a full magazine,
-all three products have a similar theme/colour scheme,
-and finally, all three for fill my Mission statement,
so to me at least the magazines are a success, they are everything I set them out to be, they represent the genre's I set, the follow my mock ups, with different degrees of success, but in general they followed my mock ups well, they appeal to my target audience, they use all the parts of my research prior to the making of the magazine.
once I started to make the digital, final copy of the magazine it highlighted the faults in my magazines design in the mock ups, for example the amount of text on my double page spread, on my mock up my it appeared to be about the right amount, but when I went to my digital copy it seemed to be lacking, thus the production of a extra coulomb sorted this problem.
I also came across the problem of copyright, thus on my content page especially, I had to avoid the use of some images to avoid copyright issues, although I know nothing would happen if I did use these pictures, but I treated this project as if it were a real magazine, thus I avoided breaking any copyright laws, I even attempted emailing one of the bands that I was going to use in my magazine, but they declined, so I removed any reference to them in my magazine.
With my final production, I made it to appeal to the target audience as much as possible; always bearing them in mind, thus creating it tailored to their wants and needs.
The colour scheme used was to represent the genre of my magazine; the layout did so as well but also make it an easy to read and aesthetically pleasing piece of media. the content in the magazine, the bands featured especially, the band featured on my double page spread all fit the criteria of my TA and fit the missions statement, thus all bands within are rock, punk or indie, and they are all British.
Thus in conclusion, from my initial plans to construct a music magazine that would be successful and appeal to a target audience, I have succeeded, I have created a magazine that could be a successful business, popular amongst its Ta and will appeal to the desired audience, it follows my missions statement and mock ups, so all in all a success.

feedback of my magazine
To get the best feedback for my magazines final product I arranged to have a group discussion, with 3 other people, 2 of which fall within my target audience but the third did not which I thought would help as it shows how it appeals to people outside of my target audience, I recorded the discussion, but unfortunately two of the people involved asked me not to post their voices, why they objected I do not know, so I have constructed a script of the conversation, in which I asked several questions, allowed them to answer and then ask me questions and then they give their opinions, I handed out a copy of each part of the magazines final product, and I also gave them copies of my mock ups so they could compare if they so wish.
(names have been replaces by member 1,2&3 which will be shortened to M1, M2, M3 and I will be seen as Dan or D) the conversation went as follows:
After thanking them for attending and handing out the prints of the magazines,
Dan: so is my product recognisable as a magazine?
M2: yeah, you can tell it’s a magazine and that it’s about music.
M1: definitely yeah.
M3: yeah it looks like something you could see in a shop in the music magazine bit.
Dan: ok, well, but what genre would you say the magazine is and why?
M1: well it says "sod calm and let’s rock" so I would go with it is a rock magazine...
M3: but on the from cover and contents page you talk about The prodigy and their techno punk, and you also talk about Kasabian, muse and the arctic monkeys and their all more indie, so it is a little hard to tell but the look of the magazine and the other bands mentioned I would say it’s more rock and punk.
M2: I think the same, also you talk of British bands, like older rock bands like Pink Floyd so I would say more rock then punk but still the punk theme too it.
M3: but the band on your bigger two page article, they seem a more punk rock band, 'cause they say about pubs and not wanting to be seen and generally it’s the more punk bands that are like that.
M1: yeah, I was going to say a similar thing, they seem to be more punk because of the same things as "M3" said but also they say they like playing small gigs and pubs which rock tend to go for as bigger audience as possible.
Dan: So what are your favourite features of the front cover?
M1: I would say the title of the magazine and the "sod calm and lets rock" with the way it goes under one letter and over the other makes it look like something a professional magazine would do, and it is a catchy kind of motto for the magazine, which would make it easy for people to see in shops and find even if the title is covered in a picture.
M3: I would say the same but I also like the mastheads font, it really shows the magazines genre of music.
M2: I really like the find us online at the bottom because the people who are going to want to read this will be like teens and so they’re going to use the internet allot so it makes it more fun and easier to do.
M1: also the will make it more interactive and people can use it more easily than having to go to the shops to buy the magazine.
Dan: ok, so what could do with improvement on the cover page?
M2: well there’s not really that much content so an extra coulomb of articles of something would make it better.
M1: I think that could help a bit yeah, also the font of some of the writing could do with being changed, but other than that looks fine to me.
M3: I would agree with the other two things but that’s about it.
Dan: how does it compare to the mock up of the front cover.
M2: it is similar in allot of ways but the few things that have change are noticeable, like the way the featured band is on the front cover of your mock up I prefer to the actual front cover, but you did well to get rid of the side coulomb about the cd.
M3: you can easily tell it is the plan for the magazine you made, apart from the fact they have the same name for the magazine, it is quiet close to how you’ve made the final magazine, just it does have the changes that "M2" has said, also the settle little changes to make it look better.
M1: what I was going to say has basically been said now, but I was going to say also that the colours used in the final magazine work well.
Dan: how about for the cover page, what do you like most about it?
M1: I just got to say I think the like sound wave behind the "Amped up" looks really good.
M2: yeah it really does, but also the whole page looks the most professional out of the pieces, it has a good colour scheme, it is nice to look at, it’s informative...
M3: it has bands that relate to the genre of the magazine.
M2: yeah it has the bands, it has all the sort of things that you would find in a normal magazine, the subscription bit especially looks good, it looks like it’s been cut out of a proper magazine.
M1: also having a picture of the front cover on it is a nice feature to have it also means if like the reader loses the front cover or it becomes detached then the magazine is still recognizable.
M3: also the picture of the band member that features on the front cover and in you double page spread, it does look like he’s on like a Polaroid so it is cool how it matches the name and what he’s wearing and the way he looks give a rough indication that it’s not a pop band on the double page spread.
Dan: so what could be improved on this page?
M1: not much.
M3: I would agree, not much could be made better for this page, just maybe more pictures.
Dan: unfortunately copyright prevented me somewhat for using pictures on there.
M2: well I still think it looks good, maybe just some more writing and more about some other articles instead.
Dan: and how does it compare to my mock up?
M3: of the three it is probable the most dissimilar to the mock up, quite a bit has been changed, mainly because of the copy right thing I take it, but most of the changes are improvements.
M2: yeah it is quiet a big change but it is for the better, but the addition of "the gear" part is a big improvement, and also having information on both side of the page, not just pictures on one side and info on the other makes it much better too.
M1: it is still similar in its basic aspects, like the title of the page and the rough layout but what you have changed between the mock up and the final piece it a great improvement.
Dan: so now form my double page spread, what do you most like about this?
M1: the way you’ve put the band members pictures on the page to me looks really good, especially the two you’ve "cut out" and stuck at the bottom right corner, the way they are kind of made part of the page looks very good.
M2: I like the content of the page itself, not too much writing but not too many pictures either, just the right amount of content, so it’s easy to read, it doesn’t bore the reader but also gives the enough information so if they do enjoy the article and are interested in the band they know where they can go to get more information.
M3: The headline of the page matches the genre of the magazine and the band, which is a good feature, the content of the written pieces on the page show that it is a punk rock band and it does keep the reader wanting to read more, as "M1" said, the pictures on the page especially the two band members in the bottom right corner does look good, and it gives you the information that any decent magazine would, like where to find more information and who we see in the pictures, or in the case of Dan, who we don’t see, which also is a good feature adding to the argument to it being a punk rock band.
M2: also having quotes from the members of the band is a good feature, most music magazine articles would include quotes much in the same way you have.
Dan: so what could be improved on this page?
M1: unlike what M2 & M3 said I think maybe a bit more writing would be nice on the page...
M2: with what in it though?
M1: maybe something about some of the music they play like if they make their own or play other bands music.
M3: well I thought I was kind of implied by what is said in the article that they do make their own music, like where they say "your only chance to buy their music", which is kind of a big hint that they make their own.
M1: still I just think a bit more writing would be nice.
M2: one thing I could think of is that where the page would fold, that may affect the writing, so maybe just moving the writing around a bit would help, also the magazine does seem very patriotic, so maybe the use of blue so you have the red white and blue of a union flag would be better, as you also have the "sod calm and lets rock" on the front in blue just some more blue colouring would be good.
Dan: ok, good, and how does it compare to the mock up of my double page spread?
M3: the only real difference I can see is the fact that you’ve added the extra segment of writing which improves it, and two of the pictures have swapped places, other than that it relates well so looks like you had a clear plan of what you were going to do and you did it and improved along the way.
M2: I would say the same thing, also you missed out the "god save the Queen" which isn’t important but I think would have looked kind of cool and also kind of makes a reference to the sex pistols, them being a punk band and patriotic British, with the song god save the queen, so that may have been good to keep, other than that it is well followed to the mock up and looks good for it.
M1: I also think it would have been cool for you to keep the "god save the Queen" but doesn’t really matter that it’s not there, and it is good that you added the extra coulomb or there definitely wouldn’t have been enough writing, so that is a big improvement, other than that, well thought out design, a good plan and you stuck to it well.
Dan: thanks, that’s good to hear, now, out of the three, which is the best?
M1: the contents page...
M2: i would say the double page spread.
M3: for me it’s the contents page as well.
Dan: why would you say the ones you have picked then?
M2: well I obviously think differently to the "M1"&"M3", I just like the layout of the double page spread, it is a good read, it has more pictures then the rest of the magazine, and I just like it the most.
M3: to me the contents page looks the most professional, and it looks the neatest, like it took the most time and like it very well could be in a real music magazine.
M1: same thing for me, it does look the most thought filled piece, and it is well laid out and looks the part.
Dan: given that you’ve seen these pages, do you think the magazine is overpriced?
M1: not really, because in your content page it does list allot of content and the people to buy the magazine would be the sort of people to really enjoy what you’re providing and so I don’t think they would mind paying that amount of money.
M3: although cheaper is always nicer, especially today, I think it is the right price for the size magazine it is and the content you provide within it, so I think it is a good deal.
M2: especially as you provide the free cd, it does make it seem a very good deal and the people who are going to buy it will be the more avid musician and will want to attend concerts and other events so the price set is a good price I think.
Dan: does the magazine seem to you like it could be successful as a magazine in the way of popularity but also as a business?
M2: it does appeal to a large audience, so I think it could be very successful as a business and in popularity yes, but it may just take a while to be noticed, as there are already large rock magazines, like major, but none I know of are mainly based on British music so that could be a USP (unique selling point) of the magazine and could really help it succeed.
M3: yeah if the magazine sells similar magazines to this issue, maintains its identity then it could become very successful.
M1: I’m not totally sure how successful the magazine would be due to the fact that there are such big magazines like mojo out there and I’m not sure just how large the audience that would read this would be, but I think possibly if the magazine can continue to provide its audience what it wants the yes it could.
Dan: now are there any questions you would like to ask me about the magazine and the pages I have handed you?
M1: would the "sod calm and lets rock2 appear on every issue?
Dan: yes it will be on the cover in every issue, not necessarily in the same place, but it will be there, to try and maintain the brand identity of the magazine and be a focal point so the magazine is noticed and then hopefully result in more people purchasing the magazine.
M3: and the magazine will be sold monthly?
Dan: yes the magazine will be sold monthly, with 11 regular copies and then every April a special copy, which may be larger, or have special features, inside the magazine and possibly also a larger cover mount.
M2: why a special copy in April and not like December when you have Christmas?
Dan: in April due to there being less sales of magazines, as show by studies of other magazines, thus hopefully by making ours stand out almost as many people should by it and also those who do buy magazines although less of them will want to buy ours.
M2: I see, so how much advertisement will be within the magazine?
Dan: well advertisement is a key feature to make sure the magazine stays successful, so it would have to be enough so that the magazine does make a profit, but not so much that the audience is deterred from reading it due to the amount of advertisement, also of course the advertisement within will be tailored to the target audience so they will have some interest in it, so adverts such as music equipment and concerts will be included, also although it may not seem it there is quite a bit of area for fashion within the magazine, of course not on the scale that you would find in a pop magazine or something like Cosmo, but being a rock and punk magazine does provide an area of fashion as the reader will probably like to form their own identity away from others.
*At this point we ran out of time and I had managed to ask all my questions, so I thanked them for their help and the discussion was finished.*
So from my discussion I learned what was good about my magazine, how I could have improved it further and also what they thought of it, I also answered their questions giving them a better idea of the magazine.

final product, double page spread of Amped up
The double page spread of my magazine, featuring the band on my front cover and contents page mains article, of the three products it follows the mock up most close, other then my hand writing being bigger then the type on a computer, thus i added an extra coloumb, which relates the atricle with the genre of the magazine even more, the colour scheme is that same as with the other pages as well. simple colours, mainly black, white and red. it also has pictures of all the members of the band, a website of the band and information of the band.
final product, content page of Amped up
the peice of the magazine im most proud of i think, but im not sure why.
it follows my mock up to a certain degree but again due to copy right reasons allot of the content i would have liked to include i could not.
the sound wave at the top a slight variation to the one on my mock up as i felt it better suited my magazine, the electric blue connected to sound and electronic music, amps, guitars ect.
the final product has a picture of the featured band, it also has a picture of the front cover so if the front cover is unattatched or something is wrong then it is still identifyable.
the page follows basic conventions which are shown in my mock up also, it has the heading which is the name of the magazine and then a subheading of Content, so it is identifiable as the content page, it then has the information of the magazine, the issue number and when it is released, then the subheadings, then a list of the article withing the magazine, the title of the article, and a short segment about the article and then the page number of the article making locating the articles easy.
also with the subscribe now at the bottom giving clear instructions on how readers can get the magazine every month at a redueced rate and with another perk so as to get as many people to subscribe as possible.
it also has a section dedicated to online sale of other products by the company and a link to that site, which is like having an online small ads, which can also be found towards the back of the magazine.
final product, cover page of Amped up
My final peice of the front cover of my magazine, unfortunately for some copyright reasons amoung other reasons i found it hard to get a picture of them in a polaroid, and as i stated in my mock up i would not be able to add the coloumb with information about the free cd on it, other then these thing i have followed my mock up very well i think, i am especially pleased witht the moto of the magazine "sod calm and lets rock" being weaved between the lettering of the masthead.
the people seen on the cover have agreed to me using their picture on the cover.
the cover follows the mock up, my mission statement and also the key conventions of a magazine.

Double page spread mock up of Amped up
The mock up of my double page spread for my music magazine Amped up, for some reason the picture refuses to be landscape and wants to stay portrait, so please try not to strain your neck reading and looking at it.
my double page spread i have tried to keep as similar to the other pages of magazine, keeping it simple, not to much writing as my magazine is a more male orientated and as shown with examples like the online magazine "Monkey" simple is better, thus i have opted for less writing and more visual content.
the page includes the band that has featured on my cover and content page "pictures of the enemy" and it portrays them as a rock band with areas of punk as they don't like to to be seen in public, the page displays them as stated a Nirvana like band in some senses, which within the whole magazine is the only reference to a band that is not British in origin, so slightly breaking with part of the theme of the magazine.
The page is made to best appeal to the TA, it displays a band that may be relateable to people as they are commented to like pubs, are a rock band, and don't want to go mainstream like many other bands are these days, the double page spread with stick to the colour code applied to the rest of the magazine, using similar style and colourings, the band featured is essentially the target audience, British, patriotic, male of the right age and fit in to the right genre of music, like pubs, and have an active night life, an active social life, enjoy music and play instruments their self. The members of the band will be school friends as they are easy, willing and have not objected to me using their pictures and names for the magazine.
the band members on the page appear to be in frames in the final product I'm hoping to make these look like Polaroids thus establishing a link to the name of the band. the title i will probably do in some form of stencil to give the band a more military like feeling as when one mentions the enemy they tend to think of conflict and warfare, this also adds to their rock, punk appearance, another essence of punk with the page is the fact in the reading they seem very anti-establishment, not wanting to be part of a larger cooperation and some other aspects, again relating to the genre of the magazine.
The double page spread also as with my other pages contains the key conventions of a magazine double page spread, it has a headline, a sube heading, it has pictures of the band featured, information about them, qoutes from them, where other information can be found, the page number and the logo of the magazine that will appear on every page that isnt advertisement and the cover, the A next to the page number.

content page mock up for Amped up
the mock up for my contents page follows much the same procedure as my mock up of the cover, it follows the key conventions of a contents page and is made in a way so it is as easy for the reader to find what they want as possible, it also includes a box of subscribe now, with information, an offer and link to a website, thus again helping the more Internet savvy reader to find the magazine in new ways, and making sure the magazine would be able to stay a successful business.
near the top i plane to have a small picture of the front cover so establish the link to that issue and also the main article on the front page which my double page spread will be devoted too is also a key feature of this page.
the other articles mentioned on the page are keyed in with my mission statement, thus they are all British bands from different periods and also all fit in to being rock, punk or indie in styling.
The header of the page being amped up content over a sound signal is again a reminder of the music origin and slight technological side of the magazine.
the content of the page is laid out like on a regular content page, the more important and more appealing articles are placed on the right, for example the main article which appears on the front cover and my double page spread is in the top right corner below the heading and sub heading saying "eclusive snapshots/ cover story" where the readers eye will first be drawn too.
Front cover mock up of Amped up
Now i have finished my research i have combined all the things i found in to a mock up, my first step in to making my front cover and giving me a rough template of what i want and more importantly tailored to what my audience will want.
Within the mock up i have included the key conventions of a magazine; masthead, main article, issue information ect. I choose most of the aspects of the mock up to fit my TA, for example, the "FIND us online" showing the gadget/ technological side of my audience and the audience of the modern age where most have the Internet, obviously the information about the concert as it is a music magazine aimed at the more serious musician and one who attends concerts regularly.
On my mock up i have created the style of the magazine i will create, it has different features so as to appeal to the TA in the right way, the mast head of the magazine in large bold stencilled lettering to show that the magazine is for the more, rock and punk genre, bold, simple but loud, not elegant or fancy like maybe some pop mags would be, and not illegible graffiti of some R'n'B or rap magazines. The name of the magazine itself "amped up" to show it is about music being loud, commonly associated with rock and more heavier music.
almost Incorporated in to the title as it is weaved between some of the mastheads letters is something that will appear on every issue, almost like the magazines "logo" it is a key feature for maintaining the brand identity of the magazine and provides and easy way to identify the magazine, "sod calm and lets rock" would be the ... of the magazine, showing again it is a rock magazine.
for my magazine i have picked to have a cover mount of a CD, this would be a extra piece of front cover like a flap, with the CD stuck on to, thus the magazines actual front cover is not taken up but there is information about the CD, unfortunately i cant show this that well in my mock up so i had to draw it as if it where part of the front cover. The front cover will have the puff of the "free CD".
the main article of the front page will be the band that will also feature in my double page spread, they will be made to look rather, rock and punkish.
on the right hand side, there is a Coloumb about a concert, this is there specifically as my magazine is aimed at the avid concert attender, the band featured in the concert are all bands that fit in with the genre of the magazine, they are also all English bands due to the other aspects of my magazine.
the banner at the bottom of the cover will be specifically targeted to my audience, offering prizes they will enjoy thus trying to encourage as many to participate as possible.

Mise en scene
Mise en scene
· body language and facial expression:
o body language and facial expressions can be used to display the genre and or the mood of the picture, for example crossed arms and a snarly look can be intimidating and seem mean, whereas smile and extended arm with a thumb up or for a hand shake it warmed and comforting, almost any genre and mood can be created on the body language and facial expressions, for example for the genre of heavy metal I can refer back to my previous example, of mean and tough looking with a snarl, rap can also be shown with a snarl but in a slightly different way the sort of way that tries to show the I don’t care what you’re saying I’m not listening. But pop could be shown with someone happy and cheery, smiling chin held high.
o In the case of my magazine I have chosen to have an slightly angry intimidating look, by having the band that feature on the front having crossed arms and not smiling but more blunt faces verging on annoyed, muscles slightly tensed so they show to be big in a attempt to intimidate or even emasculate people.
· Costume, makeup and hair:
o The costume worn by the members of a band can show the genre and allot about the band, for instance an heavy metal or death metal tend to wear allot of leather and metal and spikes, which is associated to anger and sadness, which both are also associated to the genre of heavy/death metal, in a way it is about stereotypes, the music industry is one of the only places where stereotypes are rarely broken, rocker and punks won’t go around in cloths associated with rappers and pop stars wouldn’t be caught in leather and metal studs.
o Make up: make up is not as key in displaying thing about the band and music people, the only people who tend to wear it are women and pop stars, although make up in girls can create sex appeal to certain men.
o Hair: hair can show a fair amount about the bands genre, dreadlocks is normally associated with reggae, longish shaggy hair with rock, punk and indie, but some hair styles can be shared by 2 or more genres, for instance shaving the head can be used by those in rock, metal, punk and rap.
o Thus for my magazines band I have chosen to use myself and 2 friends who I see to display the rock, punk and kind of indie genre and most of all we all look British. All 3 of us having shaggier hair, a slightly gritty look, we will be wearing kind of cardigans or drench coats and smart trousers.
o The genre of my magazines music would most be summed up by shaggy mid length hair, possibly a shirt, or a drench coat over so the shirt isn’t visible, jeans or dark blue or black combat trousers or smarter trousers.
· Settings and props
o Settings: the setting for genres of music change drastically, between the studio like setting for pop, to gritty British pubs for punk indie and rock, gratified walls for rappers. Darker setting for the darker genres instead of bright and happy pop and hip hop.
o For my magazine the cover picture is going to have a stormy or very cloud dark sky as the camera will be looking up at the people involved, so there will be no setting a such as the only visible background will be sky and maybe some trees or building tops but the setting could be classes as outside.
o Props: the props used in photos of bands can put across a powerful message, like a rapper holding a gun can show there disrespect for the law, but something that can be used as props can be iconic and easily recognisable and associable to certain genres, like bass guitars and big drums being related to more rock genres.
o In my magazines there will be no props involved, the only even slightly prop thing I can think that will be involved is maybe a watch, in way I can see our coats being used as props as they are objects to show more of our genre.
· Lighting and colour:
o The lighting for different genres differs from the light of pop to the almost black of death metal, the genre I am using, a rock, punk and indie genres will mean I will use a darker lighting and equally darker colours will be used, black, gray and dark blue.
· Position of people:
o In positioning the more important band members like lead vocalist and guitarist will be out more to the front of the picture “front men”, in rock and similar genres, in picture of bands they normally go in a zigzag, two in front the between them but behind is the other two, presuming this is a four member band like most rock, punk and indie are. Also grouping of people can create a menacing effect on the reader.
o In my magazine the positioning of me and my other band members will be me in front slightly lower down but due to the fact the camera will be looking upwards to give a more intimidating look it would put all 3 of us on equal plane but with them behind me.
Analysis of double page spread of Q
For my second double page spread analysis I have picked a slightly different style of page, a page about prize winners of Q’s own contest and it is something that I would include in my magazine.
1)The heading to this double page spread, winners gallery, in smaller font then most other headers in the magazine as there is a page before explaining that this double page spread is dedicated to the winners of the Q contests for the categories of “Outstanding contribution to music”, “best act in the world” and Q’s coveted “Hall of fame”, like all the other pages it features the Q in the corner by the header. The whole of the double page spread is presented on TV screens stacked on top and next to each other to for a full picture with certain screens dedicated to the winning bands.
2)The first prize which is “outstanding contribution to music”, which Q has awarded to Siouxesie sioux, to show the winner on the double page spread it shows the winner on a TV screen, it then has a super imposed white arrow that curls coming from a red circle, with text on top of it, which contains the details of the artist that appears in the TV screen and what award the have been given and then a explanation as to why they have received the award, in the case for this artist it is for her contribution to music, it then tells us about the other nominees and why this artist won the award “by never looking back and always pushing forwards she’s become the last punk icon standing” the circle being red and the texting being white keeps in fashion with the rest of the magazines style,
3)The 3rd band to win an award and it goes to Queen, it is the coveted “Q hall of fame” award, on the TV screen picture is shows two of the bands living members due to the tragic death of Freddy Mercury, it then has like with the other two pictures of artists a arrow from a red circle to the picture, it then has the name Queen in the boldest text in the circle, then it has the award they are receiving in slightly smaller text and then why they are receiving the award in the smallest text but much more of it, this text is also linked to a quote from Al Murray, the man picked to present the awards, he stated “Queen have one the hall of fame, though for my money a Hall isn’t enough for Queen, they should get the hall, landing, stairs, lounge, kitchen, bathroom, master bedroom and loft of fame.” this showing his option of queen and them winning this award. Him being a comedian and a keen lover of music and queen, he was picked to appeal to the audience and is seen by the majority of people who read Q as someone they like and or can relate to as he's is famous for his role as the pub landlord and his stand up comedy, and in the magazine he is dressed as he is in his role as the pub landlord. In the circle it explains about why Queen have won the hall of fame, saying there are not many band that appear in the awards of Q that have consciously or unconsciously taken after queens styles and that if not for queen, the Q awards or even Q its self may not be here today, this has come around due to Q celebrating their 25th year published.
4)Coldplay, best act in the world for 2011, Coldplay in bolder writing then the rest of the text and another arrow pointing to a picture of the band all looking very casual, the text telling the reader why they have got this award is much more quote orientated, the main quote from Noel Gallagher, formally in the band oasis with his brother before disagreements lead to the break up of oasis. Where he said about how well Coldplay performed at Glastonbury, in not so polite terms... It then goes on to talk about the key thing that clinched the deal for them is their now album rated 5 star, it then also tells us the other nominees, muse, u2, Kasabain, Arctic monkeys and arcade fire.
5)Al Murray, the prize giver of the Q awards, shown on here, appearing to be trapped within the televisions, the televisions giving the whole double page spread a very retro theme that ties in with the rest of the magazine very well, Al Murray is a very keen music fan and a monthly reader of Q, which I know from prior knowledge, his presence picked for the comic value he brings to the magazines page spread. Here appearing in his outfit he uses in the pub landlord and his stand up comedy and like Q’s brand identity this is his and something that has become iconic over the years, his presence in the magazine and as the pub landlord seeming strange for a man educated at Cambridge in history, with one of the greatest memories short and long of any living person today, but I digress. His presence is picked to attract the wider audience and he is icon and attracts attention to the 6 pages he appears on.
6)The standard conventions of any double page spread, the page number which Q chose to use 3 digit boxes as there are normally over 100 pages in the magazine and they use individual boxes for each number, the Q of Q magazine, the date and a website of Q magazine. In this issue on this page it also shows a website for all the prizes, winners and nominees for the Q awards.
7)The cat, totally random but links to Al Murray and for fun I thought I would include it, it does have some relevance thou, it goes with the retro look of the rest of the page and is like I previously stated connected to Al Murray, in the pages prior to this he is seen holding and petting it thus it does give the magazine and extra comic value as it is a stuffed cat.
Analysis of double page spread of MOJO
1)The main picture of the page, a picture displaying the band that the article is about in the case of this article R.E.M, the picture is in black and white to show its a more serious situation, the members of the band positioned in a way to show their importance within the band, the main members towards the front and although only slightly smaller with in the other band members more to the back, the band holding candles possible to symbolise a sad event.
2)The name of the article “Feeling gravity’s pull” in full capital to add more of a eye catching effect, it is large lettering to grab the attention of the reader and makes the article easy to find also creates a slight effect of making the reader want to read on to find out more to do with this article. The lettering is in a blue on a black back ground but the blue is a cold, sad colour to show the article is a sadder one then most, it also matches the photography one the article, as it is rather bleak, and dull to create the severity that the magazine wishes to create.
3)A brief introduction to the article below it and also give the reader a more in-depth view on R.E.M the band that the article is orientated around, it tells the reader briefly about the history of R.E.M and also tells them the names of the band members and what the article below elaborates on, the break up of R.E.M to leave a golden legacy behind them, with in the text it has R.E.M in white unlike the rest of the text which is in light blue, it is also quite a bit larger then the rest of the text, this is also done on the name Keith Cameron because a quote from him is included in the text “it is without a doubt bittersweet” using an oxymoron to tell the reader that it is good that they split now to leave the great legacy they are but it is a sad event that they have broken up. They also use larger white text for the name Kevin Westenberg, who is the photographer for the photo that appears alongside the article.
4)The actual article itself and it explains what the article is, it has a very large T to show where the article starts and is 4 paragraphs long, long enough to put all of the content needed in but not so long that it bores or puts of readers. The first line is in capitals and reads “The end, when it came, was as you might have expect from” so it gets across the message of what the articles about the breaking up of R.E.M and how it was in the end of their very eventful band life, the text in a ever so slightly grey white on the black background also like the rest of the pages content show a very serious and sad atmosphere , every mention of the bands name is in larger text as well. The article is in 4 short paragraphs which are all linked but slightly different topics with in each, the first paragraph being an introduction to the article and a brief bit about the break up of R.E.M, the second paragraph being about the break up its self and partially about the legacy they left behind, the third is about the history of R.E.M and shows the incredible legacy they have left behind and the things they have done within their history, the final paragraph is simply a sum up of the article and how their break up effects people and how people effected them. The whole article include many quotes from the bands and people involved with the band.
5)This small text is there to tell us what the picture is “Until the day is done” and the band members in order of how they appear in the picture, it also tells us the time the picture was taken 1991.
6)The page number which is referred to in the content pages.
Analysis of content page of MOJO
1)MOJO in the large black lettering the same as it is on the front cover in the center of the page, it show the that MOJO is a more sophisticated magazine to most others. It also displays the locations the magazine is distributed from.
2)A bar for the information of the magazine, the issue and the month of release as MOJO is a monthly distributed magazine and the year it is released.
3)The featured articles, the articles that may not appear in every magazine, something special for the reader. Featuring well known names such as R.E.M., Coldplay and some that most will never of heard of in the case for this magazine Fugazi a very recluse band that has released a interview for the magazine and it indicates like on q magazine that it is on page 52 via the numbering down the left hand side of the page
4)The main picture of the page it relates to the band on the front cover of the magazine, The Who, in black and white with a very serious look on his face to show the severity of the article it relates too.
4/5)the cover story, MOJO has a separate section to show the story and page its on for the cover story in this case it is the who it then has a far more in-depth insight to the article, it stands out from the rest of the magazines content page as it is highlighted and right next to the main picture on the page, it also has a quote below it relating to another story that appears on the cover and the page it is on.
The magazines content also has the page number in the bottom right hand corner and is only consists of red and black set on white accompanied by a black and white picture.
Analysis of content page of Q
1)The first of two content pages that appear in Q magazine the Q logo and the word contents in the middle of the page to display the fact that it is the content page, with the slogan of Q underneath.
2)The issue number appearing lager then it was on the cover in a red puff like circle it also cuts in to the top of the pictures.
3)The features of the magazine, there to tell us the content of the magazine, at the top of features a large star containing the Q award winners 2011, and below it explains more about this particular article is about and the page within the magazine where it is located.
4)The second article in the features list is of u2 who appear on the cover of this issue of Q it has a picture linked to this page showing it is one of the larger articles and one they want to promote more.
5/6) an index of the magazine of what page content appears on and pictures to accompany some of the articles, such as with Biffy Clyro and Tinnie Tempah. The featured bands and articles have the page number then in bold the name of the band or article then it has a short description of that article so the reader gets an idea of what page they will wasn't to read and the ones they wont, it makes it easier to see the rough content of the magazine and helps the reader find the articles they want.
7)At the bottom of the content page it has the page number and websites the magazine promotes.
Q uses red and black on a white background but uses colour pictures instead of black and white like magazines like MOJO predominantly uses.
Front cover analysis for mojo
1)MOJO: always appears in the same font every issue always in white with the drop shadow maintaining brand identity, it stretches across the whole cover and can appear behind or in front of the main picture on the cover dependent on the issues picture. Shown in capitals and also only the M is sharp, the rest of the lettering is smooth and gentle, especially the J which although is not visible in this issue drops slightly below the rest of MOJO, it gives the magazine and the reader the impression that it is quiet a laid back magazine for the more classical rock lovers.
2)Every MOJO magazine comes with a cover mount, which consists of a free CD and some other little bits, as shown on this magazine where the reader is enticed to purchase so to get a free CD from the brilliant (in my opinion) band Pink Floyd, which covers 2 of there best albums, the puff showing the offer is in the top left to attract as much attention to the fact the magazine comes with a free cd the cd itself is also on the left hand side at the bottom, the cover mount which is the cd is also always relevant to the main band or artist that appears on the magazine cover.
3)Pink Floyd, the main feature of the magazine, although they cover the masthead the band itself attracts the same audience and the magazine has a well know brand identity thus the masthead isn't totally needed. The picture of the band is in black and white and none of them have a smile, they all look very serious and the black and white backs this up, then it has at quote “we were a touch, cruel bunch...” the ... Implies there is more to the story thus making the reader want to read more thus needing to buy the magazine, it again looks very serious, in capitals and grey. The name of the band, pink Floyd is the largest words on the page as it is such a large band, then under it is tells us more about what the article inside will be about, “the insanity that tore them apart” which is there because unfortunately their lead guitarist and vocalist when insane. This is commemorated by the songs, brain damage and eclipse, which talk about insanity and such things, especially in brain damage the quote “and if the band your in starts playin’ different tunes, ill see you on the dark side of the moon...” due to the fact, mid song he could go on a tangent and play other songs they perform, But I digress, pink Floyd is know for its unfortunate break up thus the keen music lover will want to purchase this just for that article and cd.
4)An interview with Metallica, a sell line, appearing at the top of the page to show it is there to be noticed, again in grey and white to follow the rest of the magazines style, under the name Metallica, it has “meet Lou reed, the lead singer and guitarist of Metallica, thus people are going to want to read to here his opinion on things and what he had been asked, and his response. A picture of the band also accompanies the sell line.
5)“30 pages of reviews” a sell line, placed over the mast head so as not to cover the main image, it show the potential buyer and reader what they can expect to find inside. This attracts buyers as people want to know who is good, and who isn't, this will really appeal to those who go to music events regularly, it tells the reader some of the reviews they will find within such as Kasabain.
6)“exclusive! new interviews!” again all in capitals and the use of exclamation marks to emphasize the important of this sell line as something the reader has to have! Featuring big names that the reader will recognize such as the Beatles and Amy Winehouse.
7)The barcode, price, issue, date, standard convention of any magazine, placed in the bottom right corner so its out of the way, unnoticed, so people don't notice the price until they pay and it is somewhat of an eye sore so is small and out of the way so as not to attract attention to its self.
Front cover analysis for Q magazine issue 303
(1)Q, presented in the same way every magazine to maintain brand identity, in the top left hand corner so it gets maximum attention, the styling of Q over red but in white itself showing itself to be a some what more sophisticated magazine compared to say Kerrang
“discover great music” appearing on every issue of Q in 2011 as its slogan, showing that it offers music that I thinks is readers will enjoy and promotes maybe newer upcoming bands, this slogan is in the same style as the letter Q also white over the red square.
(2)The main sell line displaying one of the main articles in the magazine, in plain lettering so as to be easy to read yet bold enough to attract attention. "the MOST EXCITING ACTS ON EARTH" bold large in your face, it uses the text which invites people in, wants to get them to think what are they then and why are they the most exciting, the boldness and it being positioned on the left hand side of the page catches the attention of passers by, trying to almost force them to buy it as they want to find out more.
(3)Kasabian featured in bold lettering, the largest word on the page a well known band and two of the main musicians from kasabian appearing on the cover, they are easily recognized and show the genre of the music of their band; and girls who give the sex appeal that attract a wider male audience.
(4)Two puffs one displaying the content of the magazine in an advertisement sort of fashion, drawing attention to that feature of the magazine, almost out of place as it is yellow as the rest of the magazine like the majority of Q magazine which consist of only really the colours: red, black, white and some gold. The second puff showing a article inside that relates to current affairs, advertising the death of Amy Winehouse to draw more people to read as she was like my a large amount of people, in gold to suit the rest of the magazine but in a puff so not to distract from the main band picture.
(5)Another sell line involved with current affairs due to the splitting of oasis and two brother who have chosen to stay in music but take different routes, as oasis was a much loved British indie band its splitting was an event many want to know about and the new rivalry shown by the "Liam vs Noel" entices an even larger audience.
(6)The barcode, price and issue details such as date issued, a standard convention of any magazine.situated in the bottom right corner as it isn't really there to be seen by potential costumers and the smaller the price the less likely the costumer to notice and the less guilt they feel for paying the amount for the magazine as they will tend to either know the price already or only notice once at the point of paying.
The whole magazine like every copy is set on a white background for most issues, some exceptions would be issue 284; where it features artwork by Gorillaz, 288, 289 and 290 and only really featuring red, white, black and some gold in most issues.
analysis of questionaire
(on this questionnaire the person asked put that they read magazines once a week, but it has failed to show in the scan for a unknown reason)
From the questionnaire I distributed to members I feel would be part of my target audience and some who wouldn’t be but who’s contribution would still be valid I have found the following, the majority of people who would read my magazine are between the age of 16-24, have as or a level qualifications, read magazines fairly often; once or twice a month.
The questionnaire indicated that my magazine would entertain a more male audience, people who enjoy music and are British. The type of people who would read my magazine would be people who live in the UK, more people whose family is mostly to entirely English and are proud of being British, people who enjoy playing or listening to music and enjoy the genres of rock, punk and indie, who attend music events on a regular basis. The price most people would expect to pay for a good quality music magazine ranges between; £2.99 to £4.99.
In my questionnaire I asked people what the most associated with British music and got only too real answers that repeated and stood out, The Beatles and Pub bands, The Beatles being an iconic British band and one of if not the biggest band the world has ever seen, pub bands showing that the people who would read my magazine like listening to small bands while enjoying a drink with friends.
From my questionnaire I have found that for my magazine I would want to; keep it to a certain extent of patriotism (also making it an very British magazine may attract tourists to purchase the magazine), keep the price I set at £4.99 but include cover mounts, I will want to keep it up to date on the best bands out at the moment such as Kasabain ect but also broaden the readers band preference by including smaller upcoming bands and music events both large and small but more suited to the genre of music my audience will like. I will want to keep the styling of my magazine simple yet appealing to my audience, maintain brand identity (which i will by keeping the masthead in the same position and font ever magazine and the same colour, and the use of my slogan and almost logo.) keep similar colouring of the magazine every magazine which will be dark blue and reds, white and black and probably any puffs will appear in a goldish colour.
location research and featured bands for my magazine
Location research
The location for where I will take does not matter as long as there is clear view of the sky as that is going to be the background of my magazine or I will cut out our photo on to a white blank background. But other locations for rock, punk and indie could be, pubs, back streets, derelicts houses, open fields (weedy or not), woods, there are a great many places that could serve as the location for rock punk and indie as they are so versatile.
As this blog entry will be short i will also include ideas for bands that i would use in my magazine.
Featured bands or ideas
Ideas for bands that i could feature in my magazine:
Kasabain
Arctic monkey
Muse
Dark fiction (a tiny unknown band)
The Prodigy
The clash
Sex pistols
All these bands fall in to the genres i am using and are all British which for my magazine is important thus they are the bands i will or may feature, with such things as interviews, reviews of their albums and other such things.
costume ideas
Costume for photos to be used in magazine
naming and other small asspects of my magazine
for the name of my magazine i have a few idea's:
-Amped up
-Ampage
-Mute
-volume 12
In the end i choose to go with my orignal idea of "Amped up" which being a blend of being ramped up, a reference to volume and being in a hyper sort of state and of course and Amp being the main key to loud music.
my next task was to pick a style of font that suited the name and the general genre of my magazine, rock, punk and indie, but also being gritty, almost looking broken but looking hard.
the 4 fonts i chose between are on the right of this text. I felt all four represented the basic of what i wanted but my personal favorite and thus the one i will be using is the third down(in black) a font called gasmask. i feel is is gritty, almost dirty and broken looking enough to be exactly what i want for my magazine.
My slogan, for my magazine i want a slogan that shows the attitude of the magazine, i wanted it to show that it is a very British; rock, punk and indie, orientate magazine to i chose to do a twist on the classic "keep calm and carry on" which is very widely associated with Britain and i cam up with "Sod calm and lets rock" it will appear on every issue in a ways shown below, but this may be subject to change depending on how well it fits in to my final magazine.
